Multiorbital structure of the two-dimensional electron gas in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures: The formation of a dx y ferromagnetic sheet

چکیده
We demonstrate the formation of a ferromagnetic two-dimensional dxy electron sheet strictly confined to the TiO2 interface layer in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures. Based on first-principles density functional calculations we show that the complex subband structure of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) generated at the LaO/TiO2 (001) interface is universal, and almost independent of the SrTiO3 thickness. It is composed of a ladder of dxy states of light electrons and only one degenerate dxz,yz heavier subband. All the states are spin polarized although the exchange splitting is only significant for the lowest energy dxy subband, which leads to magnetic moments ferromagnetically coupled and localized at the interface. The SrTiO3 ferroelectric-like lattice distortions determine the subband occupation and therefore their orbital character, exchange splitting, and charge density profile. The complex structure of the 2DEG can explain the coexistence in the same sample of superconductivity and magnetism.

Electric-field-induced Shift in the Threshold Voltage in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 Heterostructures
The two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the interface between insulating LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 is intriguing both as a fundamental science topic and for possible applications in electronics or sensors. For example, because the electrical conductance of the 2DEG at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface can be tuned by applying an electric field, new electronic devices utilizing the 2DEG at the LaAlO3/SrTiO...

We report strong localization of two-dimensional electron gas in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 epitaxial thin-film heterostructures grown on (LaAlO3)0.3-(Sr2AlTaO3)0.7 substrates by using pulsed laser deposition with in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction. Using longitudinal and transverse magnetotransport measurements, we have determined that disorder at the interface influences the conduction be...
متن کاملQuantum nature of two-dimensional electron gas confinement at LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces.
We perform density functional calculations to understand the mechanism controlling the confinement width of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at LaAlO_{3}/SrTiO_{3} interfaces. We find that the 2DEG confinement can be explained by the formation of metal induced gap states (MIGS) in the band gap of SrTiO3. These states are formed as the result of quantum-mechanical tunneling of the charge ...
متن کاملFormation and Observation of a Quasi-Two-Dimensional dxy Electron Liquid in Epitaxially Stabilized Sr(2-x)La(x)TiO4 Thin Films.
We report the formation and observation of an electron liquid in Sr(2-x)La(x)TiO4, the quasi-two-dimensional counterpart of SrTiO3, through reactive molecular-beam epitaxy and in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The lowest lying states are found to be comprised of Ti 3d_{xy} orbitals, analogous to the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface and exhibit unusually broad features characterized by q...

The influence of non-equilibrium and equilibrium processes during growth of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) heterostructures is analyzed. We investigate the electronic properties of LAO/STO heterostructures obtained at constant growth conditions after annealing in different oxygen atmospheres within the typical growth window (1 × 10(-4) mbar -1 × 10(-2) mbar). The variation of annealing conditions is f...
